Room: TI_Reception

VanceS joined the room.

VanceS schlepps in

VanceS marvels at the silence

ThomasLev: hello!

VanceS: He Thomas

ThomasLev: I was here...but got used to the silence & got distracted

VanceS: going to NYC later this month?

ThomasLev: I was absolutely alone...for a while

ThomasLev: yes- Apr. 3 flying in & presenting both

ThomasLev: getting a little nervous about it too

ThomasLev: do the webheads have a gathering place for TH or FR?

RitaZ joined the room.

ThomasLev: Hi Rita!

RitaZ: Hi all, g'day!

NinaTL: just a sec I am learning Japanese

ThomasLev: Rita is learning Australian

ThomasLev: ...:-)

ThomasLev: How's life, Rita?

JeffC joined the room.

RitaZ: good, Tom, thanks..., and yours?

RitaZ: any news?

ThomasLev: ok here...Hi Jeff!

RitaZ: hi, Jeff!

ThomasLev: none really...getting ready for NYC

RitaZ: great, Tom! it'll be a pleasure meeting you there! :-)

ThomasLev: just wondering where webheads will gather TH or FR

JeffC: hi all

RitaZ wonders how much multitasking Vance is doing at the moment....

RitaZ: yeah, Tom, we are too many to reach a concensus, it seems ;-)

ThomasLev: it's hard enough to pick a restaurant in a small town with a small family...

RitaZ: true, Tom

RitaZ: so any suggestions?

ThomasLev: & people who care passionately about food...

RitaZ: ;-)

ThomasLev: not offhand...

ThomasLev: brb

ThomasLev: had to let a restless dog out

JeffC: what are you guys trying to reach consensus on?

ThomasLev: place to meet in New York City, midtown

VanceS: hi

RitaZ: a restaurant for 20!

ThomasLev: has to be huge

VanceS: my apologies

JeffC: what city?

VanceS: someone in myoffice

RitaZ: np, Vance, always welcome :-)

RitaZ: NYC next April 2

JeffC: well... they have a few restaraunts there.

ThomasLev: I arrive Apr 3

JeffC: here's what i recommend... scout out 5 restaraunts or so, then create a survey online, and vote on it.

VanceS: new york restaurants, in that area

NinaTL: Okay I am back. Not finished with my Japanese yet but I am here

VanceS: always a problem

ThomasLev: we have a blog we could put the survey on

NinaTL: Hi vance and Jeff!

RitaZ: yes, Jeff, but I guess we sould "democratically" come to a sudden decision and put it up..., or else we´ll never come to an agreement!!!

NinaTL hugs Rita and the boys

VanceS: ohio Nina, gozaimasu?

RitaZ: Nina? we should be deciding on a reataurant, I think, as we won't be getting room for 20 without booking, I guess

JeffC: right... and/or post the survey link on the yahoogroups list.

ThomasLev: hugs returned

NinaTL: Hajimemashite Vance san

RitaZ: wow, Nina!!!!!

NinaTL: Maybe that's like saying "Nice to meet you" to vance instead of "Nice to see you"

NinaTL: I don't know

VanceS: zenbu de nihongo wasurimasita

ThomasLev: a-so

NinaTL: I am playing with a thread on Chinswing called "Let's Speak Out Simple Japanese Words and Phrases"

NinaTL: You are way beyond me, vance!

RitaZ: gosh..., one feels illiterate with these people around :-(

VanceS: I just said I forgot all my japanese

NinaTL: A very lovely Japanese woman started it

NinaTL: She says a phrase or two and writes it out in romaji, then encourages contributors to try it

NinaTL: There are about 3-4 of us "students" so far but I have been too busy to follow it lately

VanceS: what's the url?

NinaTL: Now I have a week off for spring break

NinaTL: http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=261fc476-d89e-4453-9162-557201308d17

NinaTL: Going to join in in your spare time, vance?

RitaZ: is it a free course, Nina?

VanceS: spare time, yuk yuk

NinaTL: That's what I thought

NinaTL: It's just a chinswing thread, Rita, no fee, just fun, not actually a course

NinaTL: in the Language Channel

NinaTL: I was experimenting one day prior to starting a thread for my beginners and I posted to it

NinaTL: then I got an immediate response from Shinobu ("Perspective")

NinaTL: I was her first contributor!

RitaZ: thanks , Nina, a 3rd life needed for that ;-)

NinaTL: Anyway, you were talking about restaurants

ThomasLev: yes- any ideas?

NinaTL: I have no ideas at all

RitaZ: yes, Nina, we need to do sth!

NinaTL: I want somebody else to do something and tell me where to go and what time to go there

NinaTL: I still have to figure out my transportation

VanceS: last conference I remember a microbrew down the street

NinaTL: I've got a place to stay Saturday night in harlem

NinaTL: same hotel, Vance?

VanceS: that's brew and food

NinaTL: I don't drink but I assume that isn't necessary

VanceS: it was near the conference, not sure it's same hotel

NinaTL: I think Rita is right about needing a reservation for a crowd though

NinaTL: What about asking Laine for a suggestion?

JeffC: here's a possible starting point for you... these restaurants all have 5 star consumer ratings... and yeah... you definitely want to reserve in advance:

JeffC: http://newyork.metromix.com/facets/restaurants/ratings.user_rating.5

RitaZ: Nina, I have come across a couple of restaurants around Times Sq, is that too far, do you think?

NinaTL: It's at 42nd Street so about 14 blocks

NinaTL: There must be buses that run on the Avenues

RitaZ: it would be great to decide here and NOW, then I come make a booking, if you want

NinaTL: Thanks Jeff, will check later

RitaZ: so whats the best area, Nina, near out Convention place, Nina? you know best

NinaTL: I am thinking we might make a decision now and then find something so much better when we get there

VanceS: we should ask a new yorker like laine

RitaZ: but we are TOO many to contact each other the last minute!

NinaTL: I don't know, Rita, I haven't spent any time in New York for 40 years!

ThomasLev: my sister says, midtown is crowded & expensive, all the locals go to the Village & Chinatown

ThomasLev: including her

NinaTL: Yes, that is the problem.

NinaTL: I would have thought the Village too expensive

ThomasLev: but, if you are midtown, you go west by the river, that's where all the restaurants are

ThomasLev: it's about a five-block walk

NinaTL: That sounds near, but 5 blocks going west is actually quite far

VanceS: is it?

NinaTL: I will ask my cousin (the one who lives in Harlem) what she thinks

RitaZ: yeah, Vance, blocks are huge going east/west

VanceS: oh

VanceS: how far is huge for a block?

PattiGH joined the room.

RitaZ: hm, might be twice a s ,ong as a noemal block

NinaTL: There are about 12 avenues that cross manhattan island N/S

NinaTL: as aopposed to a couple hundred streets crossing it E/W

NinaTL: so from street to street is very short but from avenue to avenue is a shlep

VanceS: oh

NinaTL: 5 blocks is almost halfway across the island

NinaTL: This map shows midtown and west: http://gonyc.about.com/od/manhattan/l/bl_midtownwest.htm

VanceS: what year was teh last conference there?

ThomasLev: 1999?

NinaTL: The hotels are at 6th Avenue I believe

NinaTL: around 6th and 56th

VanceS: webheads were only 2 years old

NinaTL: Looks to me like 1 long block = 3 short ones

ThomasLev: Hi Patti

NinaTL: Yes, hi Patti, sorry I didn't acknowledge you before

RitaZ: sorry, Patti, hi, too immersed in the search for NYC hotels :-)

NinaTL: Patti is in denver so she can't help us

RitaZ: she'll help us next year :-)

VanceS: she can help us next year

PattiGH: Good Morning! I am sorry. I was engrossed in reading discussion threads and thinking about answers. Hope you are all well! No, I have relatives there, but that won't help!

VanceS: yeah :-)

PattiGH: Yes, next year!

NinaTL: We are ESL and EFL teachers, Patti

NinaTL: Our annual convention is coming up in a few weeks in NYC

RickRo joined the room.

NinaTL: In 2009 it will be in Denver

PattiGH: Very nice! Is the convention next year in Colorado?

NinaTL: Hi Rick

RickRo: Hi everyone!

PattiGH: I will help then!!!

RitaZ: hi, Rick

NinaTL: Sabah al kheir

RickRo: Hey! Sabah il noor!

NinaTL: il, sorry

NinaTL: I've never written it

RickRo: al is probably right... it's hard to transcribe {:-{>}

NinaTL: I am thinking about how I can get hold of a laptop at the convention so I can post to the blog

NinaTL: Maybe MEI will lend me theirs but it's old and rather large and heavy

RickRo: there are usually computers in the book fair, no?

VanceS: long lines

NinaTL: I don't want to depend on public computers at all, lines are too long

NinaTL: I want to post my impressions and photos of the day every night

NinaTL: Last year I was fortunate because my roommate Kathy let me use hers

RitaZ: thats why we need to know where to meet in advance, Nina, restaurantwise

NinaTL: but I would prefer not to ask and I will be with kathy only Thursday and Friday nights

JeffC: Can't you borrow one from your university, Nina?

NinaTL: Yes, Rita, exactly

RickRo: ARe there WH plans already?

NinaTL: I am going to investigate that Jeff

RickRo: for meeting up?

NinaTL: Maybe borrow, maybe rent

RickRo: steal....?

NinaTL: We have plans to meet, Rick but not where

NinaTL: haha

RickRo: nods

RickRo: virtual meetings, as usual....

NinaTL: Of course we could just pick a hotel lobby, or the EV, meet there, go out for a walk and choose a restaurant

RickRo: hard to find places to eat in NY, though

NinaTL: but then we would have the problem of finding one large enough to accommodate a big group

NinaTL: at one table

RitaZ: well, Nina, let's put up some more restaurants name in our wiki this week, and we'll come to a decision, Im worried about this!

NinaTL: or 2 or 3 adjoining ones

RickRo: picnic?

RitaZ: yes, as it happened in Seattle

NinaTL: Rita, maybe we can make a plan for Wednesday night

RitaZ: yes, Nina, great

NinaTL: and let otehr people plan for the other nights

VanceS: I arrive on Wed 2nd

NinaTL: I think there should be a webhead option every night!

NinaTL: Yes, vance, we do too

RitaZ: but I believe we should "democratically" decide

RickRo: meaning no one ever decides....

NinaTL: I think democratic is difficult

RitaZ: thats why ;-)

VanceS: you mean like one person decides?

RickRo: Vance is our leader; we obey all!

RitaZ: two..., or three, Vance?

RickRo: he mandates....

RitaZ bows to King Vance

VanceS: I have a week off before teh conference

NinaTL: It's unwieldy otherwise, and there are too many venues for decision making, the wiki, the blog, here...

RickRo: luck dog

VanceS: of course, Nina organized Seattle quite well

NinaTL: I did nothing about restaurants

NinaTL: just went where I was told

RickRo: tell us where to go when to go and what to eat, Vance!

RitaZ: I did that..., bec I arrived earlier

VanceS: as defacto point person I'll see that something is organzed throguht the blog or wiki

NinaTL: I am the one with all the dietary wierdnesses so it's better that I not be the one to choose for all

VanceS: we'll need a wiki, do we have one?

RitaZ: sure we do, Vance!!

NinaTL: Sincerest thanks to vance for taking on yet another job!

NinaTL: http://wia-in-nyc.pbwiki.com

NinaTL: the pw is webheads

AmandaRos joined the room.

AmandaRos left the room.

VanceS: 'll be around Wed, Thu, Fri

VanceS: and Sat most of the day

NinaTL: Same as me, Vance

RitaZ: I'll try to put up more names of restaurants along 6th Av, if possible

VanceS: we definitely need a local in on this

VanceS: we can raise someone on the list

NinaTL: That's why I think maybe Laine

RitaZ: can you contact Laine, Nina?

NinaTL: The problem with the wiki is having too many choices already

NinaTL: I don't think I have her email

RitaZ: well, Nina, we can ask and set a deadline for choosing one, then we decide and book

NinaTL: My priorities are (1) price (2) convenience (walk or bus or subway) (3) food

NinaTL: Does anyone have Laine's email?

NinaTL: Oops I do

VanceS: atmosphere, friendly and relaxed and we can walk around

RitaZ: uh, Vance, too much asking ;-)

ThomasLev: I agree with Vance

BeyzaY joined the room.

RitaZ: I'll do my best through Internet, but can never know until there

ThomasLev: in fact, if you're worried about price, you'll end up in Joisey

BeyzaY: hi all

ThomasLev: hi Beyza!

VanceS: Hi beyza

RitaZ hugs Beyza

BeyzaY: hugs Rita

RitaZ: Joisey?

NinaTL hugs Beyza

BeyzaY: hugs Nina

ThomasLev: or Chinatown

NinaTL: Don't mock New Jersey, Tom, I grew up in Hackensack!

ThomasLev: which is not bad

RitaZ: is that a restaurant, Tom? where?

ThomasLev: Joisey's ok!

ThomasLev: long walk though

RitaZ: hmm

CarlaA joined the room.

VanceS: swim/walk

RitaZ: hi, carla

NinaTL: Okay I have just sent an email to Laine listing our priorities and asking her to post to the wiki

NinaTL hugs Carla

NinaTL: Hi Carlinha!

CarlaA: hi, everyone!

VanceS: hi Carla

BeyzaY: hi Carla

ThomasLev: hi Carla!

NinaTL: I think it's too inconvenient, you have to take a bus over or under the river

RitaZ: well, we need to do a search again

CarlaA: are u talking about NY?

NinaTL: Let's see if laine responds

NinaTL: yep

RitaZ: yes, Carla, coming?

CarlaA: yes, Rita, sure!

RitaZ: great!

CarlaA: I'm taking advantage of this last year at the US.

CarlaA: don't know when I'll be able to attend it when I'm back to Brazil

NinaTL: Carla, I can stay at my cousin's in Harlem on Saturday night but if your family leaves early I would rather stay with you if possible

NinaTL: My cousin will be out of town anyway

NinaTL: She will leave me her key but it won't be any fun

NinaTL: Right, I doubt I will make it to Denver in '09

JeffC: how about something like this? http://www.dinnerinthesky.com/

NinaTL: This could be my last TESOL

CarlaA: OK. I'll see Nina. I don't know yet my sister's plans to visit me there, but we can manage things.

VanceS: why Nina?

NinaTL: ohmigod Jeff you've got to be kidding

JeffC: hehe

NinaTL: not much space for walking around there!

NinaTL: But don't worry Carlinha, because I have an alternative

RitaZ: we are trying to decide on a restaurant to get together on Wedn 2, Carla

CarlaA: for me, too, Nina, some years without TESOL!!!

CarlaA: oh, I see, Rita. So any concrete suggestions?

NinaTL: I am nearing the end of my career; and I have hardly ever gone to TESOL

NinaTL: I've just emailed Laine, Carla; we think we need a local's input on this

VanceS: end of career?

CarlaA: true, Nina

RitaZ: well..., neither have I, Nina! just now, to meet the Webheads!!! ;-)))

NinaTL: Well vance I could retire in as few as 4 years

ThomasLev: TESOL is what makes the whole career worthwhile

CarlaA: I want to go to the one in 2010 in Boston!!!

ThomasLev: imho

NinaTL: I attended both Baltimore conventions

NinaTL: Boston is reachable

NinaTL: athough not cheap

CarlaA: my sister lives there...

NinaTL: If I could get funded it would be another story

NinaTL: last year I was 100% funded (except meals)

RitaZ: Boston is a wonderful city

NinaTL: this year 0%, although my PT employer is kicking in $100

VanceS: I really enjoyed the days when we started up the CALL interest section and used to have guitar jams in the EVO after getting that place in shape late each night

CarlaA: yes, Rita.

ThomasLev: Nina you should just start working for the TESOL org.

ThomasLev: they'll fund you

NinaTL: But then I would have no summer break, Tom

CarlaA: guitar jams???that would be cool, vance...

NinaTL: and being in the classroom is what I enjoy

ThomasLev: there's lots of ways to get funding

RitaZ lokies Tom´s suggestion :-)

CarlaA: Ronaldo is a wonderful saxofonist

NinaTL: I don't want to work in an office

RitaZ: likes

NinaTL: Ronaldo plays saxophone?

CarlaA: Nina, I love the classroom, but I also love to work in "the office" giving support to other teachers and developing projects for the school

CarlaA: yes, Nina, he's very talented and a sweet!

NinaTL: I am so looking forward to meeting him

CarlaA: You'll see

RitaZ: and he'll be at TESOL, good!

CarlaA: yes, Rita. There will be many fun people from my school this year.

NinaTL: When TESOL was in Baltimore in 2004 (I think 2004) I was on the convention team and got in free

VanceS: it's hard to get guitars on planes these days

NinaTL: Who else, Carla?

ThomasLev: they had a great museum in Baltimore

CarlaA: Vance, I brougth my husband's "cavaquinho" on the way back from Brazil. No problem...

RitaZ: Michael plays the guitar wonderfully and sings, but dont think he'll take it

ThomasLev: wildest place I ever saw

VanceS: In Chicago tesol held its social dinner gala at the natural history museum there once

ThomasLev: my sister will be there- she's a world class clarinetist

CarlaA: Oh, Nina, people you don't know...The general academic coordinator, who's great and young, really interested in tech. She'll be presenting at ev with ronaldo

VanceS: saw you tube videos of Tom's sister

CarlaA: really, Tom?!

DaveKe joined the room.

VanceS: Hey Dave, how's things in Guongjiou?

CarlaA: Let me ask you something about the network Mall. How will that work for the EVO? I still don't understand it...Should we organize things there?

ThomasLev: next time you're in Baltimore http://www.avam.org/

NinaTL: wrong dave? This one is in NJ

CarlaA: American visionary art? I like that, Tom

VanceS: oh, sorry Dave

DaveKe shakes his head

NinaTL: Where are you in NJ, dave? I grew up in hackensack

DaveKe: I live in Rockaway and work at Morris County School of Technology in Denville

NinaTL: I am not familiar with that area

NinaTL: also I have lived in Maryland all my adult life

DaveKe: NW corner of Morris County

ThomasLev: any good places to eat out there?

VanceS is still awaiting onset of adult life

DaveKe: Sure

NinaTL: Is anyone else trying out pbwiki's new beta? I signed up and created a wiki but have been too busy to play with it

NinaTL: LOL

DaveKe: I thought that I was late for school here

NinaTL: We are just a group of happy webheads socializing

ThomasLev: you're a little late for school

ThomasLev: but that's no problem

DaveKe: sorry, the coffee wasn't ready yet

DaveKe: OK 'WEBheads", I have a question

ThomasLev: fire away

DaveKe: I am working on a college project for Distance Learners

DaveKe: I have to design an online course for adult learners

DaveKe: any ideas wher I can seartch for ideas?

DaveKe: I don't actually have to teach it, just design the idea

VanceS: what do you want the students to do?

DaveKe: colleg level, staff development, etc.

DaveKe: My background is Culinary Arts

DaveKe: I was thinking something with food or management

DaveKe: sanitation, safety

DaveKe: getting a job

VanceS: hold on, focus !

ThomasLev: I'm getting hungry already

DaveKe sits with his hands in his lap

ThomasLev: so you assume your students are adults

VanceS: you've shared a few broad brush strokes but to design a course it needs to have projected outcomes

ThomasLev: can handle large readings

DaveKe: must be adult population / college or staff development

ThomasLev: take online quizzes, write & send you stuff, etc.

DaveKe: yup

CarlaA: dave, as Vance mentioned, you need to have clear outcomes. In order to get there, you need to set up a plan for each course with objectives and activities for each of the objectives

CarlaA: general course objectives and specific objectives and designed tasks for each

ThomasLev: brb

PattiGH left the room (signed off).

VanceS: or to turn the cart before the horse (and why not in a world of paradigm shift)

NergizK joined the room.

VanceS: you can become familiar with tools which might in turn suggest outcomes you hadn't considered before

VanceS: Hi Nergiz

NergizK: Hi everybody

NergizK: Hi Vance

DaveKe: I have to "design document or proposal that should describe a specific Distance Learning course for a specific adult audience, in a specific educational setting of your choosing. This can be a real course, lesson, or program (i.e., putting something that already exists into Distance Learning format). It can also be one that does not currently exist but you think should be offered. Ideally this proposal could be used for a real life situation."

DaveKe: I'm not even sure where to start

CarlaA: so start with the audience you want to reach and the objectives of your course.

MoiraH joined the room.

CarlaA: what do you want your students to achieve?

VanceS: first think of something you'd like to teach or see taught that you think might benefit from interaction in an online environment

MoiraH: Hi everybody

DaveKe: not sure

VanceS: Hi Moi

NergizK: Hi Nina, Carla, Beyza, Rita, ..

RitaZ: hi, Moi

VanceS: How about the course you are taking now, Dave?

NergizK: Hi Moira

RitaZ: hi, Nerhiz

VanceS: Nergiz asked an interesting question on the list today

NinaTL: Yes, very interesting.

DaveKe: I have been working on Web CT and also have a classroom here. I want to utilize the knowlede that I have of either one.

NinaTL: I want to know the answer!

NinaTL: Hi Moi!

DaveKe: What about the course Vince?

NinaTL hugs Moira

NergizK: Ah, Vance, I haven't even had time to check if there are any ansers

MoiraH hugs Nina back

VanceS: I haven't had time to answer Nergiz

NinaTL: And coincidentally, farther down in the digest vance you described the crash of your geocities site, exactly what she was asking about

VanceS: we really should be backing up everything

RitaZ needs to read the question yet

NinaTL: How do you back up a blog or a wiki?

VanceS: the geocities site is backed up and mirrored, just a little hard to find

NinaTL: Bergiz wrote, in part: what happens if my files suddenly disappear, my blog my wikis? What if Google or

NinaTL: Pbwiki decide to stop there services or loose my data because of some virus? I have the

NinaTL: feeling I am loosing control of my data

NinaTL: How do you feel about this? Do you have your calendars and notes online? And is it

NinaTL: possible to back up my blogs and wikis?

VanceS: I think you can import files from blogs, definitely you can get a zip of your wiki

NergizK: I know that you can write your blogs offline with some software and upload it but still what about the commens. And he free service don't offer this possiblity anyway

NergizK: A zip of a wiki? I should try and find out

VanceS: with pb wiki this is sraightforward

NinaTL: Do you have to do it each time you edit the wiki (in a major way of course)--and are files also included?

NergizK: Good, my wikis are at pbwiki

RitaZ: I must be leaving now, folks, have a great week...well, back to the restaurant issue, before leaving, I'll post sth to our wiki this week, ok? Be on the alert, please, we dont have too much time left (I love having everything ready in advance :-))

NinaTL: Hi Nergiz, didn't see you come in!

NergizK: Hi Nina. No problem

NinaTL: Rita, watch for a post from Laine (I hope)

NinaTL: Have a good week

NergizK: Bye Rita

NinaTL: maybe we can chat if you have time

BeyzaY: bye Rtita

RitaZ: ok, Nina, we'll keep in contact :-)

VanceS: thanks Rita, we'll see you next week here and later in NY

NinaTL hugs Rita

CarlaA: Ok, rita. Where will you be staying rita?

NinaTL: darn! missed her

CarlaA: i'll be at the sheraton ny

NinaTL: We are staying in my colleague's room at the Hilton

NinaTL: She's funded and I'm not

NinaTL: So we are just paying the rate for extra people in the room

VanceS: lucky

NinaTL: yes indeed

RickRo: I'll be at the Sheraton too

DaveKe left the room.

NergizK left the room (signed off).

NinaTL left the room (signed off).

NergizK joined the room.

CarlaA: great, rick. So, we'll meet each other then!

VanceS: like a bunch of sky divers whoosh whoosh

VanceS: time flies. Right now I'm working on the writingmatrix article for teh WiAOC proceeds

NinaTL joined the room.

VanceS: my part is very late, must do it like now

MoiraH: OK guys, I just quickly came in after the elections here (same thing last Sunday) so next Sunday I'll try to get here earlier

VanceS: and next week i might be off somewhere, it's a long weekend

NinaTL: Sorry, my computer froze and I had to log out. Too much stuff open I guess

VanceS: probably using too many languages

NinaTL: I have heard back from my cousin about restaurants

VanceS: fast

NinaTL: I will post her suggestions on the wiki

VanceS: GR8

NinaTL: or here if you prefer

NinaTL: and/or

MoiraH: that dos sound late Vance ;-)

VanceS: you're article is good Nina

NinaTL blushes

VanceS: well written

NergizK: Really, Nina?

VanceS: it will be in On the Internet column

NergizK: Where can we read it?

NinaTL: It turned out to be so easy after all my worries about creating webpages and html

VanceS: it will be up shortly at http://tesl-ej.org

NergizK: Great!

NinaTL: It wouldn't have happened without your gentle nudges

ViolettGst2 joined the room.

NinaTL: Hello, Violett

NergizK: Bye everybody!

VanceS: many are looking forward to meeting F2F in NYC

VanceS: cya Nergiz

NergizK: Well, I definitely would...

NergizK: Bye Bye

NergizK left the room (signed off).

VanceS: Hi Violette, welcome

DaveKe joined the room.

DaveKe: Vance

VanceS: Hey Dave

VanceS: Is the project you talked about an assignment for a course?

DaveKe: Before the flurry of info, you started to tell me something about my school assignment

DaveKe: I am looking for the starting point with my assignment of designing an online course

DaveKe: as mentioned, I am a Culinary Arts instructor who recently became the Internship Coordinator

DaveKe: I have to devlop a proposal fro an online course to be taught to an adult population

DaveKe: I w ant to use my knowledeg of food and hospitality management and not reinvent the wheel here

VanceS: is your course an online one or a face to face one?

DaveKe: ...but I'm not sure here to start with this whole thing

ViolettGst2 left the room.

DaveKe: It must be designed as an online course

VanceS: I mean the course you're taking now?

DaveKe: Distance Learning

DaveKe: online

DaveKe: we get our assignments through WebCT

VanceS: so you want to develop a course on something you wish to teach

DaveKe: yes

VanceS: and something you wish to learn more about by teaching it and interacting with others

DaveKe: i guess so

VanceS: or by collaborating on a knowledge base

VanceS: on developign a KB

DaveKe: kb?

VanceS: knowledge base

DaveKe: y

DaveKe: I want it to be meaningful, not just an assignment

VanceS: so decide what you want to know more about and develop a course where you and others willb e encouraged to explore the subject

DaveKe: i guess the start should be identifying my audience

VanceS: possibly

VanceS: I would identify the topic first

DaveKe: I have taught at the high school level and will take what I know and try to apply it to the adult level

DaveKe: I have taught sanitaion certification, maybe I can adapt this for restaurant employees needing to be certified

VanceS: possibly

DaveKe: why reinvent the wheel, I should just draw on my knowledge now

VanceS: most of us do when we teach

DaveKe: yeah, I not too smart with chemistry :)

JeffC left the room (signed off).

DaveKe: oh well, I have until April 11th to put this together. I just don't want to have to rush if I don't need to

DaveKe: I'll pick away a little at a time and should be able to get it right

DaveKe: Thanks for your insight

VanceS: ok, we're here at noon GMT each week

VanceS: unitl this time

VanceS: (two hours later) that's each Sunday

DaveKe: do the webheads just talk technology or what is the normal topic?

DaveKe: who buying the next round?

VanceS: tonight was pretty typical

VanceS: we talk about whatever comes up

VanceS: you asked a good question, got us talking

ViolettGst2 joined the room.

DaveKe: ok, I'll put it down as a favorite site then... thanks

DaveKe: gotta go ...thanks again

VanceS: ok, hope to see you next week

ViolettGst2 left the room.

DaveKe left the room.

VanceS: Is anyone else non-catatonic here?

VanceS waves a hand in front of RickRo

VanceS marvels at Carla's mannequin like pose

VanceS switches off the lights and leaves quietly

VanceS left the room (signed off).
